What are the AdBlue and SCR systems?

AdBlue (DEF – Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is a urea-based fluid injected into the SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from a diesel engine’s exhaust gases. A properly working AdBlue/SCR system is a requirement for meeting EURO 6 standards and passing the roadworthiness test.

AdBlue is also called DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) — a standardised fluid of 32.5% urea and demineralised water, dosed from a separate tank into the exhaust system. If AdBlue runs out, is of poor quality, crystallises or the system fails, the vehicle enters a protection mode and gradually blocks engine start.

  • complete testing – the vehicle passes the roadworthiness test and TÜV without issues.

“AdBlue no restart in 1000 km” – the most common problem

When the SCR system detects a fault, the vehicle starts counting down the kilometres until engine start is blocked. The solution is to remove the cause and recalibrate the system, restoring the factory function – not to illegally switch the system off.

Blocked engine start due to an AdBlue fault

An AdBlue/SCR fault legally triggers a gradual vehicle lockout. The typical sequence is:

  • a yellow AdBlue light and a warning on the display,
  • a red warning and the message “no restart in 1000 km” (kilometre countdown),
  • engine power limitation,
  • finally — the engine cannot be started until the fault is fixed.

If the vehicle is already locked or counting down to a lockout, the solution is to remove the cause and recalibrate the system — not an illegal delete. After the repair we restore the factory function and reset the countdown correctly, so the vehicle runs properly and passes the roadworthiness test.
